Number of Utah motorcycle fatalities climbing

The number of motorcycle fatalities continues to climb in Utah, and safety officials fear it will only get worse.

So far this year, there have been 17 fatalities involving motorcycle riders and a few highly-publicized crashes involving reckless riders.

Safety officials say the vast majority of those involved have not had any formal riding instruction. That's where Rob Nolan comes in.

"We work on a lot of basic, general habits of keeping our head and eyes up. We use a lot of acronyms in our course; one of them is ‘SEE,' search, evaluate and execute," Nolan said.

Nolan teaches the state-sponsored, but completely volunteer, "Learn to Ride" program. With more people mounting bikes, he and others are hoping more Utahns will take advantage.
