SLC woman, 25, killed in snowy 13-vehicle pileup on I-15

A 25-year-old Salt Lake City woman, Kristen Kay Taylor, was killed in a crash on snowy Interstate 15 near Cedar City on Wednesday after low visibility led to a series of accidents. Three separate crashes involved at least 13 vehicles Wednesday about 12:30 p.m. between mileposts 34 and 36, said Utah Highway Patrol Trooper Cameron Roden. There was heavy snow in the area, and visibility was less than a quarter-mile amid heavy snowfall, the National Weather Service reported.

The first crash involved two cars and two tractor-trailers, one that spilled hay that blocked the road, Roden said. Five cars stopped for the crash, but because of the low visibility, a tractor-trailer crashed into them. A Kia Spectra driven by Kristen Taylor sawfely came to a stop behind the tractor-trailer but another tractor-trailer slammed into it from behind, smashing the Kia between the two semi-trucks.

Taylor died at the scene, Roden said. A man in the Kia, believed to be Taylor's fiance, suffered serious injuries, including an arm injury so severe that it may have been amputated, Roden said. He was taken to Dixie Regional Medical Center in serious condition.

Another car crashed into the back of the tractor-trailer that hit Taylor's Kia.

Three people were taken to a hospital with minor injuries from the initial crash, Roden said.
